Mount Mercy celebrates virtual 2020 commencement

Degrees were bestowed upon 423 undergraduate students and 179 graduate students during Mount Mercy University’s 2020 virtual Commencement Ceremony, held Sunday, May 17.

During the ceremony, University President Laurie Hamen, J.D. awarded Mount Mercy’s two highest honors for graduates. Connor Christophersen, a native of Cedar Rapids and double major in marketing and management, received the Sister Mary Frances Warde Award. Annie Ertz, an accounting, finance, and management triple major from Linn County, received the Sister Mary Catherine McAuley Award.

Margaret Peterson, a native of Wapello, was chosen as the ceremony’s student speaker. During her speech, Peterson encouraged her fellow graduates to find their passion and make an impact.

“All of us can make an impact in this world,” she said. “And this impact comes directly from pursuing those interests that you are passionate about. As you continue on your journey in life, do not let anyone or anything steer you wrong or off of your path.”

Hamen awarded three faculty members with emeritus status: Professor of Education Dr. Janet Rohner, Professor of Education Dr. Ellen Warrington, and Professor of Sociology Dr. Mohammad Chaichian.

Hamen concluded the ceremony with heartfelt congratulations and prompted graduates to continue their journey in life-long education.

“I hope you see this day as the continuation, rather than the end, of your learning endeavor,” Hamen said. “While your school work is done, for now, your life’s work has just begun. There's so much more to learn, do, and accomplish.”
