The President’s Award is given each year to a graduating student who has demonstrated a strong academic record, positive engagement in the campus community, and service to others during their tenure at Mount Mercy. The honoree also illustrates the best in student tenacity, dedication, compassion, and heart.
“Houston has graced our campus with her remarkable talents, her exuberant energy, and her genuine care for her fellow students. She has been a thoughtful leader and an excellent contributor. I am proud of her hard work and commitment in forging her path to and through Mount Mercy, and I'm excited to see where she grows from here!” said Mount Mercy University President Todd A. Olson, Ph.D.
Houston was involved in multiple clubs and activities during her time at Mount Mercy. She served as president of the Black Student Union, vice president of the Student Government Association, secretary of the Musical Theater Club, officer of SOMOS MMU, member of Gen 1 club and Project Connect, and a Mustang Welcome Leader. In addition, she worked within campus facilities as a resident assistant and for the university show choir. Her accomplishments on campus not only impacted her journey, but also her peers as well.
One Mount Mercy faculty member states “Houston encourages others to get involved on campus and is always willing to help others. That’s a clear example of ‘passion.’ ‘Voice’ comes to mind because, not only does Houston have a beautiful singing voice, but she also uses her voice to speak for others. Not only that, but Houston also amplifies the voices of those around her, lifting them up to succeed too.”
Congratulations to Houston who will graduate on Sunday, May 18, with a Bachelor of Arts in Social Work and a minor in Sociology.
