SIHRM club receives Superior Merit Award from the Society for Human Resource Management

Human Resource Management Club Recognized

The Mount Mercy University Students in Human Resource Management (SIHRM) club received the Superior Merit Award for providing superior growth and development opportunities to its student chapter members.

The superior merit award is the highest achievement level for students through the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM).

“Mount Mercy’s SIHRM club started in 2009, and the club has earned the merit or superior merit award eight of those years—with a focus on providing professional development, networking, and service opportunities to all majors,” said Tracy Tunwall, associate professor of business and co-advisor of SIHRM. “We would like to especially thank the Eastern Iowa Human Resource Association, which serves as our parent chapter, for their ongoing support.”

The SHRM student chapter merit award program, which began in 1972, was created to encourage student chapters to require ongoing excellence in the following areas: student chapter requirements, chapter operations, chapter programming and professional development of members, support of the human resource profession, and SHRM engagement.

Mount Mercy’s SIHRM club focuses on networking within the community as well as developing management leadership skills that make students attractive to potential employers. Students have received over $2,000 in scholarship funding through their participation in the club.

“SHRM is committed to engaging the future leaders of the HR profession—HR and Business students.”

Human resource management in action

SIHRM activities have included hosting the Iowa Senior Human Resource Association quarterly meeting on campus, participating in the Eastern Iowa Human Resource Association student meeting, and multiple employer site visits including Rockwell Collins, United Fire Group, Quaker Oats, and GreatAmerica Financial Services. The club participates in fundraising activities each year and multiple service contributions in the community.

“SHRM is committed to engaging the future leaders of the HR profession—HR and Business students,” said Johnny C. Taylor, Jr., SHRM-SCP president and chief executive officer of SHRM. “As we work to shape better workplaces—where employers and employees can thrive together—we are energized by the work our student chapters are doing to encourage students to choose HR as a career path.”

Mount Mercy’s human resource management major is one of few undergraduate programs in the country endorsed by the Society for Human Resource Management.
