Systems & Network Administrator

Position Summary

St. Ambrose University is seeking a skilled Systems and Network Administrator at our Mount Mercy campus in Cedar Rapids, IA. The Systems and Network Administrator is responsible for the installation, configuration, and maintenance of core technology infrastructure, including servers, operating systems, applications, and network systems. This role ensures the availability, integrity, and security of campus technology resources and supports the university’s commitment to operational excellence and service to the campus community. The successful candidate will take ownership of the day-to-day health of both systems and networking environments, while contributing to future-facing improvements as our technology needs evolve.

Key Responsibilities

  • Administer, monitor, and maintain university servers (physical and virtual), network systems, and storage infrastructure.
  • Ensure high availability of systems and services through proactive performance tuning, patching, and backups.
  • Configure and support of wired and wireless network hardware, troubleshooting connectivity issues, administrating VLANS, IP address management, and maintaining firewalls and VPN services.
  • Implement and maintain security best practices across all infrastructure.
  • Work collaboratively with IT support staff, academic departments, and external vendors to troubleshoot and resolve issues.
  • Assist with disaster recovery planning and execution.
  • Maintain documentation for systems, processes, and configurations.

Qualifications

Required:

  • High School diploma required, Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field preferred.
  • 5+ years of hands-on experience in systems and network administration, with a focus on reliability and security.
  • Experience with Cisco and Aruba network infrastructure
  • Familiarity with virtualization, Microsoft 365, Window Server environments, and common infrastructure tools.
  • Excellent troubleshooting skills across a range of systems and network layers.
  • Solid understanding of IT security principles and best practices.
  • Strong organizational and decision making abilities.
  • Exceptional communication and customer service skills.

Preferred:

  • Relevant certifications such as CCNA, VCTA, CompTIA A+, and Microsoft 365 Fundamentals, are valued.
  • Familiarity with higher education IT environments and academic technologies.
