Position Description

Mount Mercy University is currently seeking candidates to fill the position of Public Safety Officer in the Department of Public Safety. This position is part of a team responsible for the safety and security of the campus and will require working a non-standard work schedule to assist in providing 24/7 coverage. This position reports to the Director of Public Safety. This is a full-time Non-Exempt (hourly) position. Starting salary is $16.50/hour.

Primary Function

Provide for the safety and well-being of Mount Mercy University students, faculty, staff and visitors to campus. Preserve peace through patrolling campus grounds, responding to calls for assistance including emergency and crisis situations, and provide other safety-related services.

Job Responsibilities

  • Protects buildings and grounds
  • Monitors for fire, smoke and/or intrusion on campus property
  • Patrols assigned routes, stands, and watches
  • Monitors condition of and operates fire protection panels and equipment
  • Enforces parking regulations
  • Ensures the proper security and unlocking of buildings
  • Escorts students/personnel to and from parking lots/buildings as requested
  • Provide courteous and respectful services
  • Operate Mount Mercy College motor vehicles as required
  • Conduct investigations, write reports and utilize computer software
  • Performs audits of life saving devices and security systems routinely
  • Assists the Director of Public Safety in investigations of student conduct, theft, vandalism, etc.
  • Assists the Director of Public Safety in updating policies and manuals for Mount Mercy University
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • AA Degree in law enforcement, fire science, EMT certificate, or social work preferred
  • Prior law enforcement, military, or public safety/security experience preferred
  • Must possess strong interpersonal skills to provide exceptional customer service to students, faculty, staff, and visitors to campus
  • Ability to write detailed security reports with proper grammar and sentence structure
  • Basic proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word and Outlook)
  • Able to maintain a high level of confidentiality
  • Must be able to work independently with minimal supervision
