Mustang Leadership Program

Reflect, engage, and serve. These are the foundations of leadership. With the Mustang Leadership Program, we're encouraging all of our students to develop in these three key areas.

Every Mustang, Made by Mercy

MLP-Logo-web.jpgMount Mercy University is committed to providing all of our students with an opportunity to Reflect, Engage, Serve, and Live during their time here. We believe that as a Catholic Mercy institution, we are uniquely positioned to provide students an opportunity to grow as a leader as they journey toward their own vocation.

All students, whether traditional or non-traditional, graduate or undergraduate, in-person or online, are invited to join the program at no additional cost to them. We have adopted the Social Change Model of Leadership which aligns with our University mission, and we encourage everyone to take part during their time here as a Mustang.

If you are willing to commit, on average, one hour per week during your time here, you will be able to complete the three levels of the Mustang Leadership Program listed below. We will utilize Brightspace to outline the various speakers and activities you will have the opportunity to take part in throughout the year.

Placing your values at the forefront of your leadership enables you to stand strong, during good times and bad.

Blue, Silver, and Gold

Reflect | Engage | Serve

There are three levels to the Mustang Leadership Program with their own curriculum and requirements. Each level has its own focus to represent the cores of leadership: individual values, group values, and community values.

Reflect

The Blue level will be a full-year commitment during the Spring Semester and include the following:

  • Consciousness of Self: Being aware of who you are
  • Congruence: Aligning your personal values and beliefs into your daily life and actions
  • Commitment: Exercising your integrity and your innate passion

Once the Blue level is completed, students will receive a blue cord at graduation and be recognized at the Spring Mustang Leadership Award Ceremony. They have the choice to continue to the next level of the program.

Engage

Students will complete the Silver level during the Fall semester after completing the Blue level and includes the following:

  • Collaboration: Goes beyond just team work. Involves four different aspects:
  1. Human relationships and how people relate to each other
  2. A process of developing common visions, goals, and purpose
  3. Shared responsibility, authority, and accountability in developing solutions and accomplishing goals
  4. Creating synergy by capitalizing on the multiple perspectives and talents of group members
  • Common Purpose: Working in groups with others to achieve shared visions
  • Controversy with Civility: Creating a group culture where people feel safe and supported to share and explore diverse perspectives

Once the Silver level is completed, students will receive a blue and silver cord at graduation and be recognized at the Spring Mustang Leadership Award Ceremony. They have the choice to continue to the next level of the program.

Serve

Students will complete the Gold Level throughout the course of a full academic year and for those students that are with us for only two years, you will be able to complete the Silver/Gold level within one year to include the following:

  • Citizenship: Active community participation resulting from a sense of responsibility to the communities in which people live or belong

Once the Gold level is completed, students will receive a blue, silver, and gold cord at graduation and be recognized at the Spring Mustang Leadership Award Ceremony.
