Hone creative thinking skills and grow as a writer in a lively, supportive environment. Classes encourage experimentation, provide guidance in writing and editing basics, and offer a skillset that will aid you, no matter your major. You’ll be mentored by published faculty and study with students who share your passion for written expression.

Through Mount Mercy’s writing minor, you will expand your skill set and imagination through well-rounded courses that develop professional and creative writing expertise. Independent studies are also available, providing students with limitless options of study.

I credit my successful freelance writing career to those exciting, instructive writing classes. We honed our skills and, most importantly, we had fun.

See yourself in print and build a prolific portfolio to share with publishers and future employers through Mount Mercy’s annual creative writing magazine, Paha Review, or the university’s award-winning student newspaper, the Mount Mercy Times. Sponsor a creative writing contest for high school juniors, and meet and learn from nationally known authors through the university’s well-known Visiting Writers Series. 

Students who study writing choose classes in a variety of topics, including:
