In our digital world, data and data scientists influence our lives every day. From targeted ads and recommended online content to cybersecurity and artificial intelligence, much of our lives are guided by data scientists and the companies they work for.
In our data science program, you'll develop the mathematical foundations needed to understand algorithms and techniques in the field, the computing skills to use them in meaningful ways, and the communication skills needed to share your insights with stakeholders.
Students will learn to apply data science strategies and techniques to their own field of interest—whether that’s biology, psychology, criminal justice, or one of our other 40+ majors.
The program will also explore the ethics of data science, including the use and misuse of data in modern society.
After a transformational gift from CRST The Transportation Solution, Inc., Mount Mercy announced the creation of the CRST Data Intelligence Lab in 2022.
Featuring a virtual reality area, robotics equipment, 3D printers, collaboration spaces and other new technology, our students will learn the theory and practice of the profession.
Beginning in fall 2023, CRST will also offer paid internships for Mount Mercy computer science and data science students, which will supplement renewable scholarships.
Upon completing the program, you'll have extensive mathematics knowledge and programming skills in at least two languages, enabling you to use common algorithms, packages, and libraries to solve data-based problems.
The data science major will also prepare you to write and speak clearly about data and visualize it in useful ways. With a focus on communication, you'll be able to converse coherently and present information to various stakeholders, including those without technical backgrounds.
Our curriculum is holistically designed to give you an awareness of the relevant social, legal, and ethical responsibilities surrounding data, its uses, and its limitations. This awareness includes understanding the limitations of data, data science techniques, one's personal limitations, and understanding the consequences of one's work.
Mount Mercy offers competitive tuition and generous scholarships.
We also encourage all students to apply for federal, state, and other kinds of financial assistance.
