Mount Mercy University is a Catholic, coeducational university founded by the Sisters of Mercy in 1928 enrolling approximately 1,500 students. Position Description

The Department of Philosophy and Theology at Mount Mercy University in Cedar Rapids, Iowa invites applications for a full-time tenure-track appointment as Assistant Professor of Theology to begin in August of 2024. Teaching load: 21 credit hours per academic year in a 9-3-9 Fall-Winter-Spring schedule.

Requirements

The qualified applicant is a generalist who holds a doctoral degree in theology or is ABD but will have defended prior to the Fall of 2024. An ideal candidate will also value and be competent in the broader philosophical tradition of St. Thomas Aquinas and the comparative dialogue of the Catholic tradition with other religions. The candidate should possess a strong commitment to liberal education and undergraduate teaching, as well as the goods of community and place that follow from a willingness to put down roots.

The successful candidate will teach regularly in the university's core curriculum, and teach a range of courses, including Moral Theology, Church in Contemporary Society, Introduction to Christianity, Scripture. Ideally the candidate will also be able to teach Biomedical Ethics, Faith and Reason, and World Religions. The position offers opportunities for creatively designing upper-division courses that attract students to further study of theology, and expand the major and minor. The candidate will also advise and mentor majors and minors, and supervise capstone theses.

While excellence as an educator is the top priority, the successful candidate will also engage in scholarship and service, work closely with the department faculty, participate in campus committee work, and collaborate with Campus Ministry. In addition candidates should possess the potential and desire to assume some administrative departmental duties. These duties include overseeing program adjuncts, course scheduling and development, assessing program offerings, promoting interdepartmental programs within the university, and collaborating with the larger community.

Successful candidates must also demonstrate a willingness to support and advance Mount Mercy’s mission as a Catholic university as outlined in Ex Corde Ecclesiae, providing student focused education in the tradition of Catherine McAuley and the Sisters of Mercy, the religious order that founded the university.

This position also requires significant fluency in, explanation of, and active advocacy within the MMU campus community for the Catholic intellectual tradition and especially its theological dimension. Strong preference will be given to applicants who are practicing Catholics willing to make a profession of faith according to Can. 833.7, to seek an episcopal mandate according to Can. 812, and to collaborate with the local Church in joint programming.
