Tony Nickle has been on the faculty at Mount Mercy University in the music department since 2005, teaching studio piano and serving as staff accompanist. While his training was in piano performance, he now focuses on collaborative piano, primarily as a vocal coach. He has served as an accompanist, vocal coach, and production manager for Cedar Rapids Opera Theatre since 2005, working with mainstage and Young Artist Productions. He has also worked with Orchestra Iowa as a pianist in the orchestra, an accompanist, and as music director and pianist for a cabaret series that they present. Mr. Nickle coordinates and serves as the pianist for an annual recital series at Mount Mercy that brings opera singers with active careers to perform on campus. Past participants in this series have included soprano Kimberly Roberts, mezzo sopranos Katharine Goeldner and Janara Kellerman, and baritone John Muriello.
Engagements for 2012-2013 included Face on the Barroom Floor, Frankenboy! A Monsteropera, and La Bohème, all with Cedar Rapids Opera Theatre; pianist with Orchestra Iowa for their world premier performances and recording of American Gothic by Michael Daugherty; three cabaret shows also with Orchestra Iowa; Avenue Q; and appearing in recital at Mount Mercy with Susannah Biller-Kness and Austin Kness.
Mr. Nickle’s teachers have included James Martin and Ksenia Nosikova, and he has performed under the batons of Daniel Kleinknecht and Timothy Hankewich.
