Sophie Blake, a senior nursing major and Spanish minor from Clarence, Iowa, practiced the skills she learned at Mount Mercy during a month-long study abroad trip to Costa Rica. The trip was an eye-opener for Blake, changing the way she looks at life in America and giving her a passion for travel.

“It completely changed the way I see a lot of things. I want to see everything there is to see, and I want to help people while I do that. Travel nursing is the longer-term goal, but I will get out of the state in no more than two years. Ultimately, I want to work with pediatrics or NICU babies.”

Blake is the first Mount Mercy University student that will graduate with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing and a Spanish minor.

“I am so proud to be involved in language on our campus and I hope that it becomes easier for more people to take classes with Belkis and to expand the program. She is great. I have met so many people who have helped me reach and accomplish my goals. It has been a great time so far and I look forward to one more year.”

Though Blake is confident in what she does now, it took practice, determination and encouragement from Mount Mercy to get her to that place.

“I've learned a lot about myself the past few years, but I know that a big one would have to be how to study. Coming in to college is extremely hard when your high school hasn't helped prepare you. That is what happened to me, and I was afraid out of my mind. With the help of my classmates, professors and ACE, I have learned how to manage my time, and I have learned from freshman year that just because you can skip class and get away with it, doesn't mean it is a good idea.”

In addition to study habits, Mount Mercy has taught Blake how to be a better person.

“I know that if it weren't for Mount Mercy, I would not be the person I am today. Being a student at MMU has made me a better friend, family member and person all around because of the experiences I have had.”

Blake’s experiences go beyond study abroad. She is involved with cheerleading, Spanish Club and MMUANS, volunteers at the Catherine McAuley center, works in Hennessey Recreation, and was involved with the Best Buddies club.
