Mount Mercy’s pre-optometry curriculum paves the way for aspiring optometrists to bring their career path into focus.

Students interested in pre-optometry typically chart their studies in biology and chemistry. Through the lens of our well-planned course schedule, double majors (or combinations of a major and minor) are easy to accomplish.

Beyond core courses in biology and chemistry, we offer classes unique to your pre-optometry interests, including molecular biology, genetics, immunology, and analytical chemistry.

Internships and Experience

You’ll gain experience through community collaboration, job shadowing, club activities and by taking coursework that exceeds the requirements for admission to optometry school.

You’ll participate in research guided by awardwinning faculty in our teaching and research laboratories while gaining critical thinking skills essential for success in any profession. Our faculty take pride in supporting students in their academic growth, helping prepare application materials, and coaching students in studying for the Optometry Admission Test (OAT) exam.
