Pre-Medicine

Founded in science and reason, Mount Mercy's pre-medicine curriculum prepares students for the rigorous requirements of medical school admission. Mount Mercy graduates have been accepted to medical school at rates above the national average.

Students interested in pre-med typically choose between majors and minors in biology and chemistry. Double majors or combinations of a major and minor including a Psychology minor— are easy to accomplish with a well-planned schedule and steady academic progress.

Beyond core courses, students are encouraged to study classes unique to their professional interest, including abnormal psychology and genetics

Students gain experience through community collaboration and club activities, and take coursework that exceeds the requirements for their professional program of choice. Beyond core courses, students are encouraged to study classes unique to their professional interest, including Human Anatomy, Biochemistry, Abnormal Psychology and Genetics.

Internships & Experience

Students accrue valuable patient-contact hours through clinical experiences such as working as a phlebotomist or through volunteering at the Community Free Health Clinic. Students also have the opportunity to shadow local physicians.

Student research guided by award-winning faculty helps students hone their critical thinking skills—the same skills essential for success in all professional programs. Our faculty take pride in supporting students in their academic growth, helping prepare application materials and coaching students in studying for professional placement exams.

“Over my four years at MMU, I had the privilege to befriend and work with dozens of individuals from countries all around the globe—a wonderful opportunity to gain perspective on the human experience for someone who had lived in Iowa their entire life. This has helped me in my medical career, too, seeing more similarities than differences in my patients.”
