Before studying at Mount Mercy University, international student Sarka Dvorakova grew up with her mother and father in the Czech Republic city of Prostějov, just 40 miles from the Slovak boarder. Though she was only a baby when the Velvet Divorce occurred more than 20 years ago, Dvorakova is able to recognize some of the differences in the eras before and after the non-violent dissolution of Czechoslovakia.  “It’s not really about what happened 20 years ago, but it’s more like the things that remain from it until now,” Dvorakova explained.

Grotto May Day Celebration at Mount Mercy

Mount Mercy University will reenact a cherished 30-year tradition during the Grotto May Day Celebration on Friday, May 2, from 3 – 5 p.m. at Mount Mercy’s historic Our Mother of Sorrows Grotto. Entertainment will include a reenactment of the 1920s Isadora Duncan scarf dance – once a common practice on campus – and performances by student soloists representing Mount Mercy’s Music Department.  Maypole dances and door prizes are just a few of the offerings. The event is free and open to the public; seating may be limited.

For the third year, Mount Mercy University will host ExploreU@MMU World of Technology, a week-long summer program for middle-school girls interested in math and computer science.  Dr. Jitka Stehnova, assistant professor of mathematics, and Dr. Elizabeth Kleiman, assistant professor of computer science, will coordinate this year’s program thanks to support from a Tensor Women and Mathematics Grant through the Mathematical Association of America.
