Mount Mercy University’s Aquinas Lecture was established in 1959 by the Sisters of Mercy to bring philosophers and theologians to campus to speak on topics such as violence, order, love, justice and the Church in contemporary society. This year, the university will host an interdisciplinary discussion on Pope Francis’ ideas about care for the Earth, our common home, on Thursday, Feb. 25, 3:30–5 p.m., in Flaherty Community Room, Basile Hall.

Mount Mercy University students, faculty and alumni spent Wednesday afternoon at the Iowa State Capitol building in Des Moines, meeting with law makers to discuss recent health care legislation and its impact on nurses. The 2016 Iowa Nurses Association (INA) Legislative Day event attracted 260 attendees from the INA and Iowa nursing colleges, including 52 attendees from Mount Mercy University. Attendees spent the morning preparing for the meeting, learning the importance of harnessing nursing’s political power and how to approach legislators with a simple, clear message.

Mount Mercy University will host activist, poet, writer and lawyer Héctor Efrén Flores on Tuesday, Feb. 23, at 7 p.m. in Flaherty Community Room, Basile Hall, as a part of its popular Global Issues Series. The series, launched in Fall 2010, provides a platform for academic discourse and critical analysis of important social, political and economic issues of global concern.

As the Mount Mercy Bike Club continues to experience growth and high demand for its current bicycle fleet, "Ideas into Action" is proud to announce additional funding for this new campus organization. Mark Mettler, the club's founder, was recently awarded a second mini-grant to offset the costs for purchasing six more bicycles, for additional safety equipment, and for costs associated with the bicycles' maintenance. The bike club also has plans for a spring bike rodeo, an event co-sponsored by the Cedar Rapids Police Department and Northtowne Cycling and Fitness.

One of Mount Mercy's newest minors, Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), is led by Tracy Tunwall, Assistant Professor of Business. This spring marks the program's first course, offering students an extensive unit on the nature of the food industry -- its history, the dynamics of major food corporations, as well as the increasing interest in the production of food -- the farm to table process, ingredients, packaging, and marketing.
