CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa -- The Association of Independent Institutions (A.I.I.) Executive Committee has selected Mount Mercy to host the 2016 A.I.I. Division II Men's and Women's Basketball Championships this winter at the U.S. Cellular Center, A.I.I. Commissioner Ted Breidenthal announced today.

For the seventh year, Mount Mercy University is host to The Academy for Scholastic and Personal Success, a summer program serving students of color in Cedar Rapids Metro and area schools, as the program began its 26th year on June 8. To further promote and sustain The Academy for Scholastic and Personal Success program, a fundraiser is planned at the African American Museum on Saturday, June 27.

A record-breaking gift, totaling $4.5 million will be given to five entities within the Archdiocese of Dubuque.  The parishes of St. Jude and St. Patrick in Cedar Rapids, as well as Loras College in Dubuque, Mount Mercy University in Cedar Rapids, will each receive $1 million. Cedar Rapids Xavier High School will receive $500,000.This is the largest gift in its scope in that five organizations within the Archdiocese of Dubuque are recipients of the gift.

Iowa’s Lieutenant Governor Kim Reynolds is planning to visit Mount Mercy University’s campus on Tuesday, June 16 from noon-2:30 p.m. She will observe ExploreU@MMU, a week-long program that offers middle-school girls a chance to learn more about STEM disciplines (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics), in a fun and interesting environment.

Sister Mary Wilma Wolf, RSM, 97, who served God as a member of the Sisters of Mercy for nearly 80 years, died June 9, 2015, at Mercy Hallmar in Cedar Rapids after a brief illness. Services will be 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, June 16, at the Chapel of Mercy on the Mount Mercy University campus, by the Rev. Jim Brockman. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery, Cedar Rapids. Friends may call from 4 to 6:30 p.m., Monday, June 15, at Sacred Heart Chapel, with a wake service at 6:30 p.m. Arrangements are with Stewart Baxter Funeral & Memorial Services, Cedar Rapids.

Warde Hall has had an incredibly vocal guest take up residence at the front entrance to the building: a young red-tailed hawk learning to fly. The young hawk became grounded in its attempts to fly and now sits “guarding” the main entrance of the building. Throughout the day, people all over campus can hear the youngster screech at its parents. After a week of the birds being unusually active, many are wondering why they chose to call Warde home.
