It is with great sadness that Mount Mercy University mourns the passing of Sister Judith Meyers, who died peacefully at Mercy Medical Center on October 27, 2013. Sister Judith served as Mount Mercy’s mission officer for many years. Friends may call at the University’s Chapel of Mercy from 4:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, October 29, with the wake service beginning at 7:00 p.m. Funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. in the Chapel on Wednesday, October 30. Our thoughts are with Sister Judith’s family, friends, and the Sisters of Mercy during this difficult time.

Mount Mercy joins Corridor communities in mourning the loss of alumna Peggy Whitworth ’64, who passed away October 25, 2013. Peggy was instrumental in creating the Brucemore Historic Site, serving as its executive director until 2007. Her unwavering advocacy toward the cause of preservation is credited by many as the keystone behind Brucemore’s magnificent grounds. Ghouls and goblins of all ages will gather at Mount Mercy University on Sunday, October 27 to celebrate Halloween on the Hill.  Families from local nonprofit agencies along with university staff and volunteers will gather to enjoy snacks, crafts and games in Hennessey Recreation Center’s gymnasium at 5:00 p.m. before trick-or-treating at Regina and McAuley, two student residence halls on campus.

High school students from area schools attended the 16th Annual Mount Mercy Mathematics Contest on October 18, 2013 and competed in a variety of math challenges in areas such as speed, accuracy and story problems. Twenty-five teams totaling 100 students represented some of the best mathmatical talent among nine Eastern Iowa high schools.

Mount Mercy University community members now find new equipment cleaning options in the Lundy Fitness Center.  The center chose to move away from paper towels as a means to disinfect ellipticals, yoga mats, and weight centers.  Visitors will now find green cleaning products and cloth towels for wiping off equipment. All towels are changed on a regular basis and collected for laundering. The campus Facilities department coordinates washing the towels and returning clean items to the fitness center.

Dr. Neil Bernstein, Chair of the Department of Natural and Applied Sciences, led spring 2012 efforts to plant a steep hillside on the north-facing side of Basile Hall.  Due to struggles with tilling and a record-breaking dry summer, only half of the hillside successfully transitioned.  More grass seed was sown in the fall, leading to new germination in spring 2013.
