Mount Mercy College officially re-designated as Mount Mercy University during a press conference on August 23, 2010. President Christopher Blake and Chair of the Board of Trustees Charlie Rohde signed the University Charter, establishing Mount Mercy’s transition to Iowa’s newest university, and the state’s only Mercy university.

Mount Mercy College has been named one of the Best Midwest Colleges in the 2011 edition of America’s Best Colleges by U.S. News Media Group. Mount Mercy is ranked 24th this year. The exclusive rankings, which include more than 1,400 schools nationwide, will be published in the September issue of the U.S. News & World Report magazine, on newsstands starting August 24.Mount Mercy is one of seven Iowa institutions to be ranked in the Midwest Regional Colleges category.

Mount Mercy has been recognized in the Center for Student Opportunity’s 2011 College Access & Opportunity Guide, a comprehensive college guidebook designed to help low-income, first-generation college-bound students make their college dreams a reality. Mount Mercy is highlighted as an institution making strides in outreach efforts, financial aid opportunities and student support services in an effort to attract and retain students who might otherwise miss a higher education opportunity.

This year’s theme was “Becoming a Global Citizen in Mercy.” The conference was held at Mercyhurst College in Erie, Pennsylvania. Atkins’ presentation detailed Mount Mercy’s endeavors to become more environmentally sustainable.

Mount Mercy’s two highest awards for graduates were presented during the 2010 Commencement ceremony, held on Sunday, May 23: The Mary Catherine McAuley Award and the Mary Frances Warde Award. The McAuley Award is the highest honor given to a student who has attended Mount Mercy for four years. The Warde Award is the highest honor given to a student who transferred to Mount Mercy. The President’s Award, given to a graduating senior who has demonstrated outstanding perseverance and diligence in pursuing his or her goals, was given during the Honor’s Convocation on Saturday, May 22.

Mount Mercy students will showcase their exemplary academic projects on Tuesday, May 4 from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. in Lower Lundy Hall as part of Mount Mercy’s annual Undergraduate Scholars Day. The public is invited to attend and witness a wide variety of presentations from students showcasing work in English, chemistry, biology, computer science, nursing and psychology, among others.

Mount Mercy College announced today that enrollment for the Spring 2010 semester has increased 5.6% percent since Spring 2009. Total enrollment for Spring 2010 is 1,671 students. The new enrollment numbers include Mount Mercy’s four distinct student populations of traditional, transfer, adult and graduate students. The enrollment for Spring 2009 was 1,582.

Mount Mercy College has announced that it will launch new graduate programs in nursing and counseling, beginning Fall 2010. The Master of Science in Nursing program will feature emphases in health promotion and disease prevention focus, and is a 36 credit hour program that can be completed in 18 months. The Masters of Arts in Counseling and Therapy: Couple and Family Therapy Specialization is a 60 credit hour program that can be completed in two years.

Mount Mercy College has announced the following staff promotions. Director of Communications and Marketing Molly Altorfer has been named assistant vice president for communications and marketing. Director for Institutional Research Lori Heying has been named executive director of institutional research. Altorfer and Heying began their new roles January 1, 2010.

The Mount Mercy College Choir and Jazz Connection presented a ceremony of traditional readings and carols of the season on Wednesday, December 2 at 7:30 p.m. The concert took place in Stello Performance Hall, Warde Hall, and was free and open to the public. The choir performed Psallite by Michael Praetorius, Carol of the Candle by Stephen Paulus, My Dancing Day, arranged by Alice Parker and Robert Shaw, Sing We All Noel, arranged by Gary Parks, and Christmas Day by Gustav Holst.
