Mount Mercy University will host General Mills Plant Manager Rue Patel on Wednesday, Nov. 16, at 7 p.m. in Sisters of Mercy University Center, as part of the Barbara A. Knapp Business Speaker Series and Fall Faculty Series. Patel will share his experience as a first-generation immigrant from India.

Mount Mercy University’s 2016 Fall Faculty Series wraps up this week with two final events. “The Dollars & Sense of It” will be held Tuesday, Nov. 15, at 7 p.m. in Flaherty Community Room and “Our Immigration Nation” will be held Thursday, Nov. 17, at 7 p.m. in the Chapel of Mercy.

If we were to believe the images in some political campaign commercials, Cedar Rapids would have burned to the ground long ago. Hooded figures, murder in their eyes, guns in their hands, “Allah Akbar” on their lips; this is the vision too many have of Islam in America. All the while, there stands in Cedar Rapids a building that offers a quiet, persistent refutation of that vision. The Mother Mosque symbolizes neighbors, not enemies; a part of the fabric of Cedar Rapids that is enduring, interwoven, and peaceful.

Mount Mercy University will host Photographer José Galvez on Monday, Oct. 3, from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. in Flaherty Community Room as he presents his multi-media lecture “Aquí Estamos – Here We Are.” Documenting the Latino population in the United States for 40 years, Galvez combines photo presentations with lectures on various topics from the impact of César Chávez and the Chicano movement to recent Latino immigration in southern portions of the United States.

Mount Mercy University will host Iowan Shanti Sellz on Monday, October 29, for the Global Issues Series. Sellz will share her story of illegal immigration at the Arizona and Mexican border, human rights and time spent in federal prison for helping others. Sellz will speak at 2:00 p.m. in Betty Cherry Hall on Mount Mercy's campus. The event is free and open to the public.
