Mount Mercy University will proudly host the 2012 Martin Luther King, Jr. Day opening ceremony on Monday, January 16 at 8:30 a.m. in Hennessey Recreation Center on Mount Mercy's campus. Community members are welcome to attend as the Cedar Rapids and surrounding areas kick off a community-wide day of service.

Two Mount Mercy University students are gearing up to spend their summers doing missionary work in Africa. Dia Brown, a junior nursing major from Urbandale, Iowa, will travel to Sierra Leone and work with a team at Jonathan House Ministries, a house for orphans. Elizabeth Brumm, a senior English major from Cedar Falls, Iowa, will travel to the small village of Dafor, Ghana as she joins forces with the Fellowship of Catholic University Students (FOCUS).

Mount Mercy students sacrificed a Saturday morning in order to reach out within the community and live out the call to serve during Spring Outreach. More than 60 students joined together in teams to perform tasks such as yard work, staining decks, cleaning and volunteering for Cedar Rapids' non-profits.

Mount Mercy University students are packing their bags, gathering tools, and preparing to depart on March 19 for the annual Alternative Spring Break service trip as they prepare to live out the institution's mission to serve those in need.

Mount Mercy students in the Honors Student Association participated in “Trick or Canning” this past Halloween to raise canned goods for the Catherine McAuley Center.  Students went door-to-door on Halloween night and asked for canned donations.  The event is an annual tradition, and enables students to participate in servant leadership and volunteerism to benefit a non-profit organization in the community.
