Students from Coe College, Kirkwood Community College, and Mount Mercy University participating in the Cedar Rapids Dance Marathon will be taking to their feet for twelve straight hours to raise money for the University of Iowa Children’s Hospital. Cedar Rapids Dance Marathon is a student-run philanthropy organization. Students from Coe, Mount Mercy, and Kirkwood partner together to raise money for families at the University of Iowa Children's Hospital through the Children's Miracle Network.

Malinda Jensen joined Mount Mercy University as dean of students and director of residence life on July 14. Malinda brings ten years of experience to her new role at Mount Mercy. “Malinda is an MMU alumna and we’re excited to welcome her back to campus,” stated Rob Callahan, Mount Mercy’s vice president for enrollment and student services. “She’s a fantastic leader with an enthusiasm for the University that’s contagious.”

Students at Mount Mercy University traded old for new in the Students Today, Alumni Tomorrow (STAT) t-shirt swap held Oct. 24. Learners donated college-branded t-shirts from around the country and in return received a new Mount Mercy shirt. “We collected over 100 t-shirts advertising other colleges and universities,” said Ryan Phillips, annual giving coordinator. “Our Development and Alumni Relations office supplied each donor with a brand new Mount Mercy t-shirt to replace their old one.”

Mount Mercy University will host a texting while driving simulator on campus September 10, 2013, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Partnering with an organization called PEER Awareness, Mount Mercy’s M2AP Board, Student Activities and Recreation and Wellness groups all came together to bring the simulation to campus. The simulator showcases the dangers of texting while driving in a safe, controlled environment.

Mount Mercy University has named Francesca (Checka) Leinwall, Ph.D., dean of students. She was previously the vice president for student affairs at the University of Pittsburgh at Titusville.

Mount Mercy University now offers new specialty license plates, available through the Iowa Department of Transportation. Mount Mercy alumni, students, faculty, staff and friends of the University can showcase their pride in Iowa’s newest university with Mustangs blue and gold license plates. The plates are available through each Iowa county treasurer’s office.

Dr. Luke Timothy Johnson will serve as Mount Mercy University’s keynote speaker for the annual Aquinas Lecture on October 28 at 7:00 p.m. in Flaherty Community Room, Basile Hall. The presentation, “Learning Jesus in the Life of the Church” is free and open to the public.

Mount Mercy’s 2009 President’s Report magazine was recently given the Award of Distinction at the 2010 International Academy of the Visual Arts Communicator Awards design competition. The Communicator Awards is one of the largest design competitions in the world, and this year drew over 7,000 entries from across the country. The Mount Mercy Magazine is designed by Benson & Hepker Design in Iowa City.

Mount Mercy will hold its annual Iowa Immigration Heritage Multicultural Fair on Monday, April 19 from 3:00 – 7:30 p.m. The fair, which takes place in Betty Cherry Heritage Hall, is free and open to the public.In addition to food, arts and crafts representing the cultures of Mount Mercy’s international students, there will also be entertainment such as Brazilian dancers, Latin America music and dances, and Irish ballet dancing. Guests will also have an opportunity to take a practice Citizenship Test in Lundy.

Mount Mercy College will perform the musical Quack April 15 – 17 at 7:30 p.m. each evening, and April 18 at 1:30 p.m., at Mount Mercy’s McAuley Theatre. Tickets are $8.00 for the public and $6.00 for students and senior citizens. Group rates are available at the student price for groups of ten or more. The McAuley Theatre is located in the lower level of McAuley Hall on the Mount Mercy College campus. For more information call 319-363-8213 ext 1229.

Mount Mercy College’s Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) team won its thirteenth consecutive SIFE Regional Championship April 8 in Chicago. The Mount Mercy team advances to the SIFE National Competition to be held May 11-12 in Minneapolis. At this year’s Regional Competition, the Mount Mercy team beat squads from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, The University of Toledo, Ohio, and Wilbur Wright College in Chicago.

Mount Mercy Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) team will hold a special presentation on Monday, March 29 at 5:00 p.m. in Flaherty Community Room, Basile Hall. The presentation is free and open to the public. The SIFE team won its 12th consecutive SIFE Regional Championship last year in Minneapolis, Minnesota and advanced to the SIFE National Competition held in Philadelphia, Pa.

Mount Mercy students are packing their bags, gathering tools, and preparing to depart on March 19 and 20 for Spring Break service trips as they prepare to live out the institution’s mission to serve those in need.  More than 20 students and staff will leave on March 20 for a Spring Break service trip to San Juan, Texas March 20 – 28. The group will repair houses and construct homes for low-income families in the area during the annual trip.

The Mount Mercy College Choir will perform A Schubertiad, the music of Franz Schubert, during a special performance on March 17 at Noon in Stello Performance Hall, Warde Hall on the Mount Mercy campus. The concert is free and open to the public.The Choir will perform “To Music,” “Little Rose on the Heath,” “Laughter and Tears,” “To the Nightingale,” “Travelling,” “Death and the Maiden,” “Serenade,” “Night and Dreams,” “Gretchen at the Spinning Wheel,” “The Joy of Living,” and “The Dance.”

The Mount Mercy College art gallery will exhibit the work of artists Jude Tallichet and Matt Freedman March 12 – April 22 during a Super Bowl re-enactment installation titled “Bar Menard” at the Janalyn Hanson White Gallery on the Mount Mercy College campus. An artist lecture with guest speaker Joy Sperling, associate professor at Denison University, will be held March 12 from 5:00 – 6:00 p.m. in the Busse library viewing room, with an opening reception in the Gallery starting at 6:00 p.m.

Mount Mercy’s Academic Technology Librarian Vicky Maloy will present “An Introduction to Graphic Novels” on Friday, March 12 from 2:00 – 3:00 p.m. in the Busse Library Viewing room as part of Mount Mercy’s book club, “Bring Your Own Book” (BYOB). The public is invited to bring a favorite graphic novel and share their experiences. Refreshments will be provided. The book clubs, sponsored by Mount Mercy’s Busse Library, meet monthly in Mount Mercy’s Busse Center, and are free and open to the public.

In celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, Mount Mercy students set out to volunteer with local agencies dedicated to bettering the community through service and volunteerism. In all, more than 40 students volunteered their time and energy to serve in a variety of capacities, from mucking and gutting flood-effected houses with the Block by Block program, to painting and remodeling for Aid to Women.

Mount Mercy College will host a ceremony celebrating the value of service in remembrance of Martin Luther King, Jr. on Monday, January 18 at 9:00 a.m. in Hennessey Recreation Center.Mount Mercy President Christopher Blake will welcome the community. Cedar Rapids Mayor Ron Corbett will serve as guest speaker, as well as Dedric Doolin, president of the Cedar Rapids branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP).
