One Mount Mercy University student is sharing her musical talents with the Cedar Rapids community. Freshman Julia Simons has been cast as Cosette, a lead character in Theatre Cedar Rapids’ production of the world-famous Les Misérables.

Mount Mercy University is hosting the Cedar Brass Festival June 17 – 29. The event unites dedicated musicians advancing their skills with excellent literature, musical coaching, and opportunities to learn from one another. The first week of the event will focus on large brass ensemble repertoire with the second week involving chamber music. Musicians will participate in rehearsals as well as sectional coaching. Performances open to the public will conclude each week.

Mount Mercy University will host the Five Seasons Chamber Music Festival June 10 – 15. The community is welcome to observe activities taking place throughout the week. Free concerts open to the public will be held Friday, June 14, with harp and flute ensembles performing at 5:00 p.m., and strings, piano and brass performing at 7:00 p.m. On Saturday, June 15, a performance including faculty ensembles and the Five Seasons Chamber Music Festival Orchestra will be held at 7:00 p.m. All performances will be in the Chapel of Mercy at Mount Mercy University.

Mount Mercy University's Music Department will present the annual "Spring Sing" concert on Wednesday, May 8. Choir, Jazz Connection, Handbell Ensemble and Band will perform a tuneful celebration of spring at 7:30 p.m. in the Chapel of Mercy. The performance is free and open to the public; seating may be limited. Selections include "Les Miserables," "You Made Me Love You," and "Shenandoah."

The Mount Mercy University Women’s Choir will perform alongside Orchestra Iowa and other local choirs during Brucemore’s “Brucemorechestra” on Saturday, September 18 at 7:30 p.m. at Brucemore. Gates open at 6:30 p.m. The performance will be broadcast on Iowa Public Television on Monday, September 20, at 8:00 p.m.The Women’s Choir will perform Gustav Holst’s famous orchestral suite, The Planets. The piece is a seven-movement orchestral, with each movement named after a planet of the solar system.

Frontier Natural Products Co-op™ employee band Aeroroot, comprised of Mount Mercy College Assistant Professor of Business Tracy Tunwall, alumni Clint Landis ’88 and Brett Karminski ’01, along with Steve Krusie, Frontier’s public relations director, has been selected for the semifinals of Fortune magazine’s annual “Battle of the Corporate Bands” for the second straight year in a row. The band will perform in Las Vegas on May 22 at the Western Regional Competition.

The Mount Mercy College Choir and Jazz Connection presented a ceremony of traditional readings and carols of the season on Wednesday, December 2 at 7:30 p.m. The concert took place in Stello Performance Hall, Warde Hall, and was free and open to the public. The choir performed Psallite by Michael Praetorius, Carol of the Candle by Stephen Paulus, My Dancing Day, arranged by Alice Parker and Robert Shaw, Sing We All Noel, arranged by Gary Parks, and Christmas Day by Gustav Holst.
