Emilie Jacobson, a senior biology major at Mount Mercy University, was recently named a 2015 Newman Civic Fellow, an award given to promising student leaders who have demonstrated an investment in their community.

Mount Mercy University continues to expand academics this spring by offering two new undergraduate majors, a new minor and additional tracks of study.     The Department of Natural and Applied Sciences welcomes chemistry and science marketing majors in Spring 2015. “While chemistry has existed as a minor,” stated Terri Crumley, dean of admissions at Mount Mercy, “we’re pleased to transition it to a major with tracks in biochemistry and forensic science to help more students work toward their bachelor’s degrees and ultimately their careers.”

Assistant Professor of Chemistry Joe Nguyen, Ph.D. was recently awarded an Engaged Scholar Faculty Fellowship through Iowa Campus Compact, a coalition aimed at advancing the public purpose of colleges and universities. As a fellow in the program, Dr. Nguyen will participate in professional workshops and events over the course of a year and will receive a stipend to foster a civic engagement project on campus. The details of the project will be presented at the Upper Midwest Civic Engagement Summit or another Iowa Campus Compact network opportunity.

Assistant Professor of Chemistry Joe Nguyen, Ph.D. will receive the Distinguished Iowa Science Teaching Award during an Iowa Academy of Science banquet in Fort Dodge on April 11, 2014. Professor Nguyen was nominated by Mount Mercy colleagues in recognition of his exemplary work and innovative teaching style. Nguyen, a distinguished researcher, joined Mount Mercy’s faculty in 2010 and has received numerous honors during his academic career including the Ray Q. Brewster Teaching Award.

Mount Mercy University Assistant Professor of Chemistry Joseph Nguyen, Ph.D. has been selected as one of six Fellows of the FUTURE in Biomedicine program at the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine.
