Mount Mercy University students, faculty and staff spent Spring Break 2018 in Texas responding to the still-heavy need for volunteers after Hurricane Harvey hit in August 2017. Twenty-six Mount Mercy community members made the trip and spent March 18–24 in the Beaumont and Port Arthur areas dismantling houses and cleaning up neighborhoods.

Dr. Robert Callahan, Mount Mercy University vice president for administrative, enrollment and student services, will become the 11th president of Silver Lake College of the Holy Family in Manitowoc, Wisconsin. Callahan has been vice president at Mount Mercy since August 2012 where he provides vision and leadership for the division of administrative, enrollment and student services.
VANG — A Migrant Play

“VANG,” a two-person play telling the story of four immigrant farm families settling in Iowa, will stop at Mount Mercy University on Saturday, Oct. 29, at 7 p.m. in McAuley Theatre. A collaboration between Poet Laureate of Iowa Mary Swander, Pulitzer Prize winning photographer Dennis Chamberlin, and Kennedy Center award-winner Matt Foss, “VANG” captures multiple eye-opening journeys and exposes the struggles of Hmong, Mexican, Sudanese and Dutch immigrants.

Students studying music at Mount Mercy University found new friendly faces on campus this fall, as two staff members were hired over the summer to accommodate for the program’s growth: Kent Keating and Steve Stickney.

Mount Mercy University Associate Provost & Executive Director for Academic Innovation Dr. Tom Castle was awarded the Council for Accelerated Programs Lifetime Achievement Award for his work with adult students. Only three others have received the prestigious award.

Two Mount Mercy University admissions counselors were recognized for their accomplishments at the MIDWest Association for College Admission Counseling Conference in Minneapolis, May 15–17. Tyler Poldervaart, MMU admissions counselor since January 2014, was one of three state nominees for the Iowa Association of College Admission Counseling’s Rising Star Award. This annual award recognizes one outstanding staff member who exemplifies excellence and dedication to serving the needs of students in transition from high school to college.

Mount Mercy’s faculty and staff will reveal their artistic talents at the first faculty/staff art exhibit in almost 10 years. An opening reception for the exhibit will take place Oct. 29, 4–6 p.m., at the Janalyn Hanson White Gallery.

Mount Mercy University is pleased to announce the appointment of Scot Reisinger, current director of athletics, as dean of adult programs. Reisinger was the successful candidate following a national search and is assuming oversight of accelerated bachelor, online and graduate programs for the university. His efforts will promote continued quality and growth of these high-demand programs.

Mount Mercy University Campus Minister Erin Broich is making progress towards the completion of her trilogy book series, “The Guardians of Light,” by releasing the second edition of “Book One: The Betrayer” last summer and “Book Two: The Land of Sand and Sea” this fall.
