CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG-TV9) -- Mount Mercy University in Cedar Rapids is starting a new program to help low-income and first generation first-year students get through college called Project Connect. Thirty-five students will attend a four week summer program to get more acquainted with campus. Then, throughout the school year, the students will meet with mentors who'll help them keep up with their studies.

Mount Mercy University has developed a new program to improve graduation rates for low-income, first generation students. The initiative, named Project Connect, will launch Fall 2017 thanks to a $310,000 grant from the Chicago-based Caerus Foundation.
