Originally from Miskolc, Hungary, Magda Brown was deported on one of the final transports to Auschwitz-Birkenau with her entire family when she was just 17 years old. Her parents died in gas chambers; her brother was the only other member of her family to survive and served in the Hungarian military’s Jewish labor force until being captured and imprisoned by the Russian army.

A Day In My Life As An MMU Student – Video $500 prize Winner: Nikki Utinkova, Czech Republic Nikki is an international student from the Czech Republic who studied on Mount Mercy’s campus during the 2013-2014 academic year. Her video captures a typical day in her life as an MMU student. “In my spare time in between traveling back home, I created a video. I hope you will like it,” she said. Nikki recently arrived home in the Czech Republic, and her friends on campus already miss her greatly.

What single hateful moment leaves an impression -- that tweet, this post, his pic, her laugh -- fleeting actions that seem harmless create ripples of pain for the subject. Ongoing torment scars, breaks, and damages lives. It's happened to us all at some point in time -- the ghost of a playground bully crosses your mind, an insult slips out at work, or someone gets a laugh at your expense in class. Some of us bounce back from the hurt. Some of us never heal. What word will your actions spark in others? We hope it's love.

Mount Mercy University's Music Department presented its annual "Spring Sing" concert May 8 in the Chapel of Mercy. Choir, Jazz Connection, Handbell Ensemble and Band performed selections including "Les Miserables," "You Made Me Love You," and "Shenandoah."
