This four-day Mount Mercy tradition is required for all entering students and will immerse you in campus life.

Mustang Welcome is the perfect opportunity to get to know your classmates and new home on the Hill! An in-person orientation full of information and activities, Mustang Welcome helps you discover your Mount Mercy community.

First-year student schedule

8:00 AM–4:00 PM | Move-In for Residential Students

4:30–6:00 PM | New Student Picnic
University Center & Rohde Family Plaza

This is the kick off to Mustang Welcome and all incoming students are invited to attend! Food and games will be provided.

6:00–6:20 PM | Welcome
Chapel of Mercy

Meet Mount Mercy’s President, Dr. Todd A. Olson, and Student Government Association President, Tiara Munoz, as they welcome you to the Hill.


6:20–7:00 PM | Mustang Welcome Leader Meeting
Various locations

All new students will be divided into small groups to experience Mustang Welcome together. Each group has two Mustang Welcome Leaders who will provide you with information for your Mustang Welcome experience and answer any questions you may have about Mount Mercy.


7:00–8:00 PM
Mandatory Residence Life Meeting | Chapel of Mercy

For residential students only. The Residence Life team will meet with all students living on campus to go through the ground rules for your new home.

Commuter Social | Flaherty Community Room, Basile Hall 204

For commuter students only. This social will provide commuter students the opportunity to connect with Mustang Welcome Leaders who also commute and can answer any of your commuting questions.

We’ll have outdoor games, trivia, and a bonfire with your favorite s’mores ingredients to top off your first night of Mustang Welcome!

*Optional activity. Emmaus, a Catholic-affiliated student organization, will provide students the opportunity to connect with peers through prayer and conversation each morning.

All new students will be divided into small groups to experience Mustang Welcome together. Each group has two Mustang Welcome Leaders who will provide you with information for your Mustang Welcome experience and answer any questions you may have about Mount Mercy.

Students will be given the option to go off-campus and enjoy what the Cedar Valley has to offer. Off-campus options include: Lost Island Waterpark, hiking, bowling, or a tour of Cedar Rapids (ice cream included).

*Optional activity. Campus Ministry will host a Sand Volleyball Tournament open to all new students, so stop by to meet some Campus Ministry staff and Peer Ministers.

Students will rotate between sessions hosted by campus staff and students to provide information on the student experience at Mount Mercy University.

1-hour rotations

In this identity workshop, students will explore the identities they hold and how these identities impact how they see the world.

2:00–3:15 PM | Work Study Training

For work-study students. Students that hold a work-study position will be contacted by their supervisor to complete training at this time. Student Financial Services will also host open hours to allow students to drop off or fill out necessary forms.


3:15–3:30 PM | Mustang Welcome Leader Meeting

All new students will be divided into small groups to experience Mustang Welcome together. Each group has two Mustang Welcome Leaders who will provide you with information for your Mustang Welcome experience and answer any questions you may have about Mount Mercy.


3:30–4:30 PM | Convocation

Students will hear from President Olson, Provost Tim Laurent, and faculty members as they begin their academic experience at Mount Mercy.


4:30–5:00 PM | Campus Traditions

Students will have the opportunity to sign their name on the tunnel wall and attend the Class of 2026 tree planting during this time.

*Optional activity. Join the American Heart Association in this highly interactive workshop to prepare for a potential emergency scenario. All attendees will get to practice their CPR technique during this time.

*Optional activity. Have questions about Catholicism on campus and want to learn more? This session is open to all students with questions about the chapel and Mass while providing other important information.
