Let’s Talk: Finding Common Ground

September 25, 2017 - 3:30pm to 4:30pm | Betty Cherry Heritage Hall

On new shows, social media, and even at the dinner table, it is easy to find people eager to speak in opposition to others’ political opinions. Sometimes these heated discussions turn words into weapons; speakers reduce their political foes to something less than fully human and the conversation becomes counterproductive. In this context, what is needed is the simple art of civil conversation with those who think differently. Professor of Communications Dr. Dave Klope will explore the perceptions which create obstacles to such conversation, such as stereotyping, essentializing, objectifying, and prioritizing self before another; and will provide suggestions for navigating such obstacles in a heated political climate.

This event is part of the 2017 Fall Faculty Series — Divided We Fall: Finding Common Ground in a Fractured Age.

Associate Professor of Communication David Klope has been instructing Mount Mercy students since 2001.
