MMU celebrates international students with Multicultural Fair

Multicultural Fair

Mount Mercy University will celebrate its international students and the diverse cultures they represent at the annual Multicultural Fair on Thursday, April 26, from 3 to 5:30 p.m. in the Sisters of Mercy University Center Commons.

The fair will feature nearly 20 stations, representing many cultures and countries through posters, artifacts, apparel, music, food and other items.

Cedar Rapids community member and Guatemala native Pablo Estrada will put on a fashion show, displaying his modern Guatemalan designs. Washington High School’s dance team is also scheduled to perform, and traditional foods prepared by students and MMU’s dining services will give visitors the chance to explore cultures even further.

“Each international student has a unique experience and perspective that we can all benefit from,” said Mahder Serekberhan, event organizer and student vice president of International Club. “This event not only promotes diversity and appreciation for other cultures, but also it is a celebration.”

Countries and cultures represented at the fair include: Cameroon, Guatemala, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Honduras, Congo, Ecuador, Ethiopia, Togo, Ireland, Venezuela, England, Haiti, Lebanon, Germany, Mexico, H’mong nation and MMU’s Black Student Union.

All are welcome at this free, family-friendly event.
