Communities come together at MMU to celebrate Peace Day

Mount Mercy University, Regis Middle School and the Sisters of Mercy took a stand with millions across the globe today to recognize International Day of Peace, commonly known as Peace Day.

A project of the United Nations that began in 1981, Sept. 21 is a global holiday when individuals, communities, nations and governments highlight efforts to end conflict and promote peace. This year's theme was Together for Peace: Respect, Safety and Dignity for All.

People gathered to form a chain between University and Sisters of Mercy peace poles in support of the day’s mission. Together, the group locked hands and sang “Peace is Flowing Like a River” after a minute of silence.

Established on the Sisters of Mercy five critical concerns—earth, immigration, nonviolence, racism and women—Mount Mercy’s culture guides students in exploring and working towards a more just, equal and peaceful world.
