Alumnus Mark Hennessey ’88 explores importance of social media in career advancement

Mount Mercy University alumnus Mark Hennessey PHR, SHRM-CP, TAS, returned to campus Feb. 9 to examine the importance of personal branding and explore how leveraging social media bolsters a job search.

Sponsored by Mount Mercy University Career Services, Hennessey shared insight about why social media is critical for advancing a career, how a small investment of time can pay huge dividends, and the do’s and don’ts of using social media in a job search. He also spoke about his journey as a Mount Mercy student and his post-graduation career path.

Hennessey graduated from Mount Mercy in 1988. He is a senior recruiting manager for ACT, Inc. in Iowa City and has been in the recruiting field for almost 16 years. Also experienced in social media, Hennessey regularly presents on how to use social media for job seeking and networking.

“We were delighted to welcome Mark back to Mount Mercy,” said Cheryl Redd, career services director. “His experience in social media, especially LinkedIn, has been developed over the course of 10 years. That experience, coupled with his work in recruiting, gives him the ideal background to speak about the influence of a well-developed personal brand.”
