MMU celebrates Year of the Rooster with third annual festival

Mount Mercy University will host the Third Annual Lunar New Year on the Hill, Jan. 22, 5 p.m.–8 p.m., in the Sisters of Mercy University Center Commons. This event, celebrating the Year of the Rooster, will feature various demonstrations, games and food suitable for all ages.

The Lunar New Year, also known as Chinese New Year or Spring Festival, is a traditional Chinese holiday that celebrates culture, heavenly deities, ancestors and the start of the New Year. There are 12 Chinese Zodiac animals, one assigned to a year, with this year being the Year of the Rooster.

Mount Mercy’s annual on-campus event celebrates diversity in the student body and highlights the traditions of other cultures through a fun and entertaining festival.

“Lunar New Year on the Hill is an excellent opportunity for families and students to come celebrate and learn about some of the Southeast Asian cultures,” said assistant professor of chemistry and the event’s organizer Joe Nguyen. “The Lunar New Year is one of the largest holidays for most Southeast Asians because it is a time they celebrate family.”

This event is free and the public is encouraged to attend. Food will be available at the event for a minimal charge ($1–3 per plate).
