Nearly 55 high school students compete in 19th Annual Math Day

Nearly 55 area high school students attended the 19th Annual Mount Mercy University Math Day on Thursday, Oct. 20.  The students competed in challenges that involved speed, accuracy and story problem solving.

“These students appreciate the value of having a solid fundamental knowledge of mathematics and quantitative reasoning skills which can be applied to a broad range of careers,” said Dr. John Robeson, associate professor of mathematics. “Trophies were awarded after the top five teams in each class competed in Math Jeopardy that covered six challenging topics.”

Mount Mercy students helped to make Math Day a success, acting as mentors, proctors, test scorers, game score keepers and helping with computer data input.

The teams of students represented the best mathematical talent from five schools in the area. Center Point-Urbana High School, Western Dubuque High School, Jefferson High School, Mid-Prairie High School, and Iowa City West High School all sent their best mathletes to compete.

Students completed challenges that tested their abilities all day and at the end of the competition, winners were announced.

We wish to offer our warm congratulations to the winners and to each student who participated.
