Students clean, explore city during Mercy in Action Day

About 100 Mount Mercy University freshmen are teaming up with the Cedar Rapids Metro Economic Alliance to help with service projects around the city during Mercy in Action Day, Aug. 21.

For the second consecutive year, Mount Mercy students are encouraged to explore downtown Cedar Rapids while participating in the service projects. Projects include trash pick-up, landscaping, and cleaning benches and lights.

“This service day sets the precedence for the rest of the student’s time at the university,” said Isaiah Corbin, director of volunteerism and service learning at Mount Mercy. “It shows the students that Mount Mercy places a very strong emphasis on service and also helps them understand what makes Mount Mercy what it is.”

The day also gives students from outside Cedar Rapids a chance to interact with local business owners and see the place they will call home for the next four years.
