Enactus brings home top 12 at National Expo

Mount Mercy University’s Enactus club placed in the top 12 at the 2016 Enactus United States National Exposition in St. Louis, Missouri, on May 17. This is the highest ranking the team has earned in the 18 years Enactus (formally SIFE) has been at Mount Mercy.

“As I am sure all the Mount Mercy College/University SIFE/Enactus alumni would agree, this team made us extremely proud with what they did throughout the year to put themselves in a spot to be successful at nationals,” said Dr. Nate Klein, Mount Mercy Enactus adviser and assistant professor of business. “To know that we competed against teams with 10 times our budget, with teams from Division 1 schools, and then to know that the impact we've had on our community put us in the top 12 in the nation makes me extremely proud.”

Mount Mercy Enactus was up against 400 other Enactus teams from around the country, first chosen to compete as one of 200 teams at the 2016 Enactus Regional Competition. One of 120 teams at the national competition, the team advanced to the semi-finals and ended with a top 12 finish.

Each of the teams had 17 minutes to showcase their entrepreneurial projects during the expo. Mount Mercy Enactus members highlighted EmpowHer, Experience Makes More Cents, Market at the Mount, eCommerce Case competition and Business in Belize.

The presentation team included Enactus President Seth Pennock, Kelsey Kuester, Macy Demeulenaere, Mikayla Calloway, Conner Taylor, Marco Fichtner, Leslie Hoffman, Derek Siddell and Blake Seda. Other traveling members included Darren Stanley, Lloyd Mackay and Katrina Ashbacher.

“Great teams know that it's hard to continue to be on top, so it's fun to know that members of the team will be working already this Friday with a local entrepreneur to help grow his business,” Klein said.

Enactus provides students with the opportunity to make a difference and to develop leadership skills through learning, practicing and teaching the principles of free enterprise with the motto, “A head for business, A heart for the world.”
