Mount Mercy English professor Mary Vermillion recently published an article in Literature Interpretation Theory, a journal of literary analyses. Her piece explores author Jane Smiley’s A Thousand Acres, a 1991 rewriting of Shakespeare’s King Lear.
“I’m excited about the article because it combines several of my favorite teaching interests: Shakespeare, novels, feminism and social justice,” said Vermillion.
Her article entitled, “The Uses of Tragedy: ‘A Thousand Acres’ and American Exeptionalism” appears in Volume 25, Issue 2 in special edition Literary Counterhistories of US Exceptionalism. Read the article here.
