Blake Mikesell named director of public safety

Mount Mercy University has named Blake Mikesell director of public safety. Mikesell is a 2000 graduate of Mount Mercy. He received his master's degree in criminal justice from St. Ambrose University in 2010. He was previously an Investigator II for the Office of the State Public Defender in Cedar Rapids.

As the director of public safety, Mikesell is responsible for all areas of safety and security for the residential campus. He oversees personnel management, training, budgeting, and federal and state reporting mandates.

He has held positions with Mount Mercy and Kaplan University as an adjunct criminal justice instructor; Nash Finch Company as an area asset protection manager; Von Maur and Shopko stores as a loss prevention manager; and D.A.R.T. Juvenile Boot-Camp as a boot camp instructor and facilitator.

He is the member of the Iowa Public Defender Association as the investigations chairperson and is a board certified criminal defense investigator. In addition, Mikesell has facilitated the juvenile Hands Off program with the Cedar Rapids Police Department Crime Prevention Bureau, a form of boot camp that serves as an alternative to formal probation for juveniles under the age of 16. He has been a guest speaker for Christ Church Presbyterian, Trinity United Methodist Church, Jefferson High School and Southeastern Community College.
