New student-developed Web program "Linda" to be unveiled

Mount Mercy’s Department of Natural and Applied Sciences is pleased to announce the unveiling of a student-developed Web program, "Linda," that will benefit nursing students at Mount Mercy. A rollout event will be held on Wednesday, May 16, at 7:00 p.m. in Basile Hall’s Flaherty Community Room.

The rollout will provide an opportunity to demonstrate the program and recognize the hard work of students in computer science, management information systems, and graphic design who helped develop the system alongside faculty mentors. The event is free and open to the public; seating may be limited.

"Linda" is an Electronic Medical Record (EMR) Web application developed by students in the nursing and computer science programs. The software program is dubbed, “Linda” in honor of the late Linda Groepper, associate professor of nursing and director of the clinical simulation laboratory, who cast the vision for the application and who passed away in 2011.

The “Linda” software is designed to replicate software that hospitals use to record patient details; enabling nursing students to gain the software skills they will need in hospitals during their professional careers to electronically chart a patient's condition. Students who collaborated on the project and formally presented the rollout during Scholarship Festival on May 2 include computer science major John Erickson and graphic design major Travis Schaufenbuel, under the mentorship of Lecturer in Computer Science Steve Strong and Nursing Lab Technology Specialist Mary Lou Saindon.

Mount Mercy’s computer science program provides students with opportunities to gain hands-on experience writing large pieces of software, and offers a deeper set of skills through areas of specialization developed in conference with advisors. Employers find these areas of specialization highly valuable, while students have a greater level of control over their college experience. Mount Mercy also offers a modern science lab, allowing project-based learning on real networked systems.
