Mount Mercy names Valencia Johnson academic support and retention specialist

Valencia JohnsonMount Mercy has announced that Valencia Johnson has been named academic support and retention specialist, effective October 31.

In her new role, Johnson will work with a wide range of campus constituents, including students, faculty and staff. She will help ensure that incoming students experience successful and positive transitions upon enrolling at Mount Mercy, and work to engage campus resources to encourage student success and retention. Johnson will also work with Mount Mercy's eight academic departments to help facilitate retention and create prospective student-oriented activities of special interest, tailored to various majors.

Johnson brings with her a wealth of experience in the world of academic advising and student support. Prior to joining Mount Mercy, she served as a student success advisor at Savannah College of Art and Design in Atlanta, Ga. In that role, Johnson monitored the academic progress, enrollment and retention of numerous undergraduate.

In addition, she worked alongside at-risk students to realign them under strong academic goals, worked with an early alert intervention system to address student needs, and partnered with faculty and staff in developing ways to provide new freshman with academic support.

Johnson is a member of the National College Learning Center Association and the National Academic Advising Association. She holds a Master's of Education degree in higher education and student affairs from the University of South Carolina, and a Bachelor of Arts in English and communication from Columbia College, S.C.
