Mount Mercy hosts Martin Luther King celebration of service ceremony

MLK Day eventMount Mercy University will serve as the host for the annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day celebration of service on Monday, January 17 at 9:00 a.m. in Hennessey Recreation Center.

Mount Mercy President Christopher Blake will welcome the community as we honor Dr. King with this unique event. Special guest speakers include Cedar Rapids Mayor Ron Corbett, Congressman Dave Loebsack, and LaSheila Yates, from the Civil Rights Commission. The ceremony will also include the presentation of colors.

Mount Mercy students and community members are partnering with non-profit agencies to perform a wide range of skilled to unskilled services with local agencies in the Cedar Rapids community, including the Arc of East Central Iowa, the Catherine McAuley Center, Iowa Legal Aid, Aging Services, Inc., and Big Brothers Big Sisters of Cedar Rapids and East Central Iowa.

A collection drive for the Catherine McAuley Center has been in full swing all week. The public has helped supply donations of rice, dry beans, canned fruit, canned meat, DVDs, hygiene products, paper products, and feminine hygiene products. Mount Mercy students will help deliver the donations to the Catherine McAuley Center after the ceremony.

The ceremony will serve as an inspiring reminder of the power of volunteerism and servcie, as teams set forth after the ceremony to perform tasks within the community. Mount Mercy students will mobilize after the ceremony to help volunteer at the Catholic Worker House, Catherine McAuley Center, and a variety of other non-profits.
