Jonathan Humston

Assistant Professor of Chemistry

  • PhD University of Iowa
  • BS University of Northern Iowa
  • BA University of Northern Iowa

Dr. Jonathan Humston recently joined Mount Mercy University, after earning his PhD in Chemistry at the University of Iowa in 2017.

Humston teaches Physical Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, and Introduction to Chemistry for nursing students. Prior to graduate school, he gained valuable experience teaching high school science at Iowa City High School.

Humston conducted research studying enzyme dynamics using two-dimensional infrared spectroscopy. Further interest in the methodology eventually led him to apply compressive sampling techniques to reduce data acquisition times. Humston’s dissertation topic involved compressive sampling methods that were applied to two-dimensional infrared spectroscopy.

Humston’s research was featured in The Journal of Physical Chemistry and Optical Letters. As a teaching assistant at the University of Iowa, he received the University of Iowa Council on Teaching Outstanding Teaching Assistant Award and the Department of Chemistry Outstanding Teaching Assistant Award.

Outside of Mount Mercy, Humston serves as a public safety SCUBA diver, assisting public safety agencies in conducting water-related search and recovery operations. He enjoys reading, learning, exercising, being outside, and spending time with his wife and children.
