About

Philip Drey became an Associate Professor of Religious Studies for Mount Mercy during 2023. Before this role, he taught as a Special Appointment faculty member since 2016 and as an adjunct for the university since 1999.

He earned a BA in History from the University of Notre Dame and holds a MA and PhD from Andrews University, emphasizing Biblical Archaeology and Languages.

In addition to his position at Mount Mercy, Drey is an adjunct instructor at Kirkwood Community College (traditional, online, and ADVANCE courses). He also had taught Theology at Xavier High School for 17 years.

In the community, Drey lectures on Biblical Archaeology and related areas. He is currently working on transforming his co-authored book Ancient Pottery of Transjordan into an online pottery database.

Drey has also worked closely with the Archdiocese of Dubuque and other diocese to improve and strengthen the Catholic identity of schools (K-12). Drey has presented at national conventions and conferences on Catholic identity, specifically how to intentionally infuse Catholicity throughout curriculum as well as how to actively engage parents as the primary educators of their child(ren).

Drey deeply enjoys spending time with his wife, Amanda, and trying to keep up with his two boys, Cooper and Carter
