Faculty Profile: Education Faculty

Marc McCoy, Education

Assistant Professor of Education Dr. Marc McCoy joined Mount Mercy in 2010 after serving as an adjunct instructor since fall 2009.

“I decided to teach while in high school. I figured being around young people would keep me young. After a long career as a principal, I wanted to continue to have some impact on education. I’d hired many Mount Mercy grads to teach in my building, so was excited to get the chance to join a quality teacher prep program.”

Dr. McCoy previously served as principal at Excelsior Middle School in Marion, Iowa. He also served as a high school associate principal and junior high school principal at Linn-Mar, as well as an adjunct instructor at Drake University and the University of Northern Iowa.

Beyond Mount Mercy’s solid programs, Dr. McCoy appreciates the university’s close community and what it allows for faculty, staff and students.

“Mount Mercy is like a small, family-owned business. Unlike a Walmart or Target, it values quality and personal relationships.”

Dr. McCoy received his Bachelor of Arts in English from the University of Northern Iowa and his master’s and doctorate in educational administration from the University of Iowa. His professional interests include secondary education, teacher preparation and internships, teacher evaluation, and educational leadership. Personal achievements include receiving the Linn-Mar Wall of Fame “Innovator” award, completing two short-course triathlons and a marathon, and receiving a kiss from Meredith Viera on national television.

When Dr. McCoy is not teaching, he enjoys spending his time in the gym, on his bike, reading and writing fiction, and tweeting for the Education Department under the handle @educationmmu.
