Steve Gilmour
Accounting Faculty

Associate Professor of Accounting Steve Gilmour uses his years of experience to help students make connections between what is learned in the classroom and the reality of accounting careers.

“I have a passion for teaching, and I enjoy sharing my knowledge and insight about the accounting profession with my students,” Gilmour says. “I have many years of experience to draw upon, and I hope to help make real-world connections between the course content and the reality of what actually occurs in the business setting.”

Before joining Mount Mercy in 1985, Gilmour served as a full-time instructor at Northern Illinois University. He worked for a Certified Public Accounting firm in Chicago for a few years before returning to Northern Illinois to earn his Master of Account Science degree.

Gilmour, who is also the accounting program coordinator, is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) and is the AICPA on-campus champion for Mount Mercy. His areas of interest include cost accounting, auditing principles and financial accounting.

Because of the value Gilmour puts on understanding and experience, he asks prospective students to expect to work hard, but stay involved with extracurricular activities.

“Expect to find accounting classes to be challenging,” Gilmour said about preparing to attend Mount Mercy. “Don’t be afraid of working hard and studying often to ensure academic success. Get involved with campus activities, including sports if able. Be sure to start considering your career path after graduation well before you reach that point. Internships and work experience in the accounting field are crucial to your future success.”

Being a positive role model, inspiring students to work hard, and helping achieve their academic and work related goals are a few of Gilmour’s proudest achievements, along with passing the CPA exam.

When he is not teaching, Gilmour enjoys reading, walking, music, learning about personal investing topics and watching sports. He is a big fan of the Chicago Cubs, Bears, Blackhawks and Bulls.
