English Study Abroad

Study Abroad

Interested in seeing the world while completing your English major? The Mount Mercy English program provides numerous opportunities for students to travel to exciting parts of the globe as part of their academic experience. Our majors have studied abroad in such places as England and the Czech Republic and have participated in rewarding service projects in Africa. Our English program also features two travel courses: British Literature and Culture, which features a trip to London, Oxford, Canterbury, and Bath; and Irish Literature and Culture, which travels to Dublin, Belfast, and Derry. These travel options thus allow you once-in-a-lifetime opportunities to literally walk in the footsteps of the authors you study and to see the world and experience different cultures firsthand, all while creating priceless memories that you will cherish forever.

What students are saying about travelling with the Mount Mercy English program:

  • “This trip was …memorable and life changing.” -Kristin Bullock Herman
  • “This trip has solidified my desire to travel the world” and “has given me a stronger sense of independence and confidence.” -Katlin Klein

Not only can you see the places that inspired the greatest masterpieces of British literature, but you can also tour some of the most important historic sites of British history and culture. Some of the exciting places you could see in this course include:

Other Travel Opportunities

Want more opportunities to put your English major to good use in other parts of the world?  Mount Mercy offers several other travel programs that have enriched our English majors’ experiences as Mount Mercy students!

If you are looking to study abroad, Mount Mercy offers you several chances to complete part of your English major at multiple different universities around the world!  Our majors have spent semesters at such places as Canterbury Christ Church University in England and Palacky University in the Czech Republic, and Mount Mercy has recently reached an agreement with the University of Stirling that would enable future semesters abroad in Scotland!

If you are interested in making a difference abroad, our English majors have also participated in many service projects in other countries.  For example, one of our English students recently travelled to Ghana to work with local children and build houses as part of the Fellowship of Catholic University Students (FOCUS). Such service opportunities thus not only allow students to see different parts of the world, but they also allow you to use your travels to help others in need, making an already exciting experience even more worthwhile.
