Mount Mercy English majors gain experience through internships, study abroad and through many extracurricular activities.

The English major offers various opportunities to gain experience in real-world environments through job shadowing and internships with local companies. The department helps students find internships that suit their individual interests, talents, and goals. Students have interned at:

  • The Academy for Television Arts and Sciences in Hollywood
  • The African American Museum of Iowa
  • The Alzheimer's Society of Cedar Rapids
  • Breakthrough Basketball
  • The Brucemore Historical Site
  • The Catherine McAuley Center
  • The Cedar Rapids Gazette and several other newspapers
  • The Cedar Rapids Humane Society
  • The Hiawatha Public Library
  • KGAN
  • The National Czech and Slovak Museum and Library
  • The Nebraska Arts Council
  • Ruffalo Noel Levitz
  • The United Way
  • University of Iowa HealthCare

On campus, Mount Mercy English majors write, edit, and design several publications: the Honors Council Newsletter; the college newspaper, Mount Mercy Times; and the English department's annual magazine, Paha Review (a creative writing magazine).

Mount Mercy English majors are an interesting, talented, and ambitious group. One of them is going to write and direct her own play this spring, one of them is studying in the Czech Republic, one of them is going to study in Italy next year, one of them has completed four internships, and one of them regularly publishes columns in The Cedar Rapids Gazette.
