Director of Library Services

Mount Mercy University a Catholic, coeducational University seeks a Director of Library Services to oversee a thriving library program housed in the expansive Busse Library facility and reaching out through personal and digital services to support teaching and learning, scholarship, and a vibrant academic culture. Offering undergraduate and graduate education to nearly 1900 students in traditional semester-based, accelerated, and online formats, Mount Mercy takes pride in a library program that is fundamental to carrying out the University’s mission of academic excellence and compassionate service, in the spirit of our founding Sisters of Mercy. 

The Director of Library Services provides visionary leadership to build a rich array of instructional programs and services meeting the current and emerging needs of students and faculty; to assure strong library resources; to support patron inquiries and research needs through personalized staff services; and to offer a welcoming environment to students and others for individual or collaborative study, projects, meetings, technology access, or special events. Assigned as consultants to programs or departments and serving as members of key committees, the Library Director and staff play an integral role in educational activities across the University. Professional engagement in regional and state collaborations is also a hallmark of Mount Mercy’s approach. 

As part of the library’s pivotal role in promoting important academic outcomes and facilitating effective use of teaching/learning resources, the Director serves as Brightspace (D2L) Learning Management System administrator. Supported by the Instructional Technology Librarian and other members of the professional staff, the library offers individual guidance, informative digital resources, and workshops as part of an array of training tools for students and faculty as they utilize Brightspace for courses, program assessment, and other activities.

This is a twelve-month position in the Academic Affairs division, reporting to the Provost, and with an anticipated start date by January 2018. The successful candidate will demonstrate a compelling vision for the University library, understanding of current and projected academic library needs and issues, effective administrative skills for managing a year-round program and substantial budget, positive supervisory experience, and excellent communication and interpersonal abilities for working with a wide range of constituents. Experience implementing a learning management system, particularly D2L, is highly desirable. An ALA accredited master’s degree is required along with five years of successful university library experience in progressively responsible roles.
