Computer Science Program Features

The computer science major is perfect for students interested in careers in web and software development, information technology, or computer programming. Mount Mercy’s computer science program helps students focus on areas of specialization to help zero-in on ultimate after-graduation goals.

Job Possibilities
Our alumni are IT specialists, database administrators, systems analysts and many other technology-based professionals. Because of our superior instruction and convenient class schedule, many employers find Mount Mercy to be the ideal choice for growing employee skill sets.

Internships & Hands-on Experience
Students benefit from Mount Mercy’s connections with employers throughout Cedar Rapids, by gaining hands-on experiences through internships with local companies like Rockwell Collins and Pearson. These opportunities give students a chance to apply classroom techniques to real-world scenarios, putting them ahead of their peers after graduation. Our computer science students have also installed and configured a supercomputer called a Rocks Cluster, which offers an outlet to obtain the skills needed to code in research or governmental settings.

Our lab hosts more than 20 computers with technology tailored specifically for our computer science majors in an environment built for comfortable learning. Computer science majors are given 24-hour access to this computer lab, making it their own space.

Computer science students are encouraged to share their research. Past presentations have covered topics like encryption in a parallel programming environment.

Student Clubs
Students with a passion for computer technology enjoy the Computer Club. The club works on technological projects that benefit the campus community and aims help fellow students embrace and grow their technical abilities.
