Systems Administrator

Mount Mercy University is a Catholic, coeducational University founded by the Sisters of Mercy in 1928 enrolling approximately 1850 students. The University offers a variety of liberal arts, professional, accelerated and graduate degree programs on a picturesque campus overlooking the city.

Mount Mercy University is seeking candidates to fill the position of Systems Administrator within the Information Technology Department. This position reports to the Director of Infrastructure and Systems / Director of Information Technology Services and is a full-time, exempt position.

WORK SCHEDULE:  Employed for a 12-month basis with a standard work week or as identified in the most recent revisions of the Human Resources Staff Policy and Procedures Manual or as determined by immediate supervisor. Travel requirements may at times result in the employee being away from home.

PRIMARY PURPOSE:  Responsible for effective provisioning, installation/configuration, operation and maintenance of systems hardware and software and related infrastructure. This individual participates in technical research and development to enable continuing innovation within the infrastructure. Ensures system hardware, operating systems, software systems and related procedures adhere to organizational values, enabling staff, volunteers and partners.

  1. Engineering of SA-related solutions for various project and operational needs.
  2. Install new / rebuild existing servers and configure hardware, peripherals, services, settings, directories, storage, etc. In accordance with standards and project / operational requirements.
  3. Install and configure systems infrastructure applications or Asset Management applications.
  4. Develop and maintain installation and configuration procedures.
  5. Contribute to and maintain system standards.
  6. Research and recommend innovative and where possible automated approaches for system administration tasks. Identify approaches that leverage our resources and provide for economies of scale.
    Perform daily system monitoring, verifying the integrity and availability of all hardware, server resources, systems and key processes, reviewing system and application logs, and verifying completion of scheduled jobs such as backups.
  7. Perform regular security monitoring to identify any possible intrusions.
  8. Perform daily backup operations, ensuring all required file systems and system data are successfully backed up to the appropriate media.
  9. Create, change and delete user accounts per request.
  10. Provide Tier III / other support per request from various constituencies. Investigate and troubleshoot issues.
  11. Repair and recover from hardware and software failures. Coordinate and communicate with impacted constituencies.
  12. Apply OS patches and upgrades on a regular basis, and upgrade administrative tools and utilities. Configure / add new services as necessary.
  13. Maintain operational, configuration or other procedures.
  14. Perform periodic performance reporting to support capacity planning.
  15. Perform ongoing performance tuning, hardware upgrades, and resource optimization as required. Configure CPU, memory and disk partitions as required.
  16. Maintain data center environmental and monitoring equipment.
  17. Other projects and duties as assigned

  1. An associate degree from an accredited institution in related area; and/or equivalent experience, training or certification
  2. Three years of relevant system administration experience preferred
  3. CISCO and ARUBA experience preferred
  4. Microsoft server experience required
  5. Experience with Microsoft Office 2016 applications (Access, Word, Excel, Outlook) is required
  6. Experience with Microsoft Windows Operating System is required
  7. Other combinations of experience and education that meets the minimum requirement may be substituted


  1. A valid driver's license is required.
