Assistant/Associate Faculty and Clinical Director in Marriage and Family Therapy

Mount Mercy University is a Catholic, coeducational university founded by the Sisters of Mercy in 1928 enrolling approximately 1800 students. The University offers a variety of liberal arts, professional, accelerated and graduate degree programs on a picturesque campus overlooking the city.  Mount Mercy University is seeking candidates to fill the position of Assistant/Associate Faculty and Clinical Director within Marriage and Family Therapy Graduate Programs. This is a 12-month, tenure track position and reports to the Program Director. 

Primary purpose

This position is a tenure-track faculty position in the Marriage and Family Therapy graduate programs, with administrative responsibilities for Olson MFT Clinic and Counseling Services.

The position will teach content courses within Master’s and Doctoral Marriage and Family Therapy programs (reduced course load), provide clinical supervision for Master’s students engaged in practicum experiences, work with doctoral dissertations/clinical projects, and fulfill university-driven faculty responsibilities.

Clinical Director administrative responsibilities include oversight and daily function of the Olson MFT Clinic, our on-site community clinic, and oversight of the Counseling Center, the undergraduate student counseling services, as our Master’s Student Therapists in Training are the direct providers at both locations. Counseling Services' responsibilities include up to 5 hours weekly of client contact time. Clinical Director supervises university employees and staff related to the program and clinic.

The Master’s program is a COAMFTE accredited program, geared toward providing opportunities for both traditional and non-traditional students, as course are taught in the evening and on an accelerated block schedule. Mount Mercy’s research-based classes and quality practicum experiences ensure that students have the necessary skills to be an effective therapist or consultant in a variety of settings. After completing their post-graduate supervised hours, they are eligible for state licensure as a marriage and family therapist

The Doctoral program (PHD) is an apprentice model, working with students to become advanced clinicians, gaining theoretical knowledge while working alongside our accomplished faculty in a collaborative, personalized environment, with classes taught in flexible combination of face-to-face, online, and residential intensives with the working professional in mind. The doctoral program has three specialization tracks: Leadership and Business; Advanced Couples Therapy; & Neuroscience and Psychophysiology.


The position must have a Doctoral degree in (or ABD) marriage and family therapy, and be fully licensed/license eligible in the state of Iowa. Preference given to 3+ years of relevant experience as a fully-licensed mental health provider. This position requires AAMFT approved supervisor or supervisor-candidate status with strong consideration given to 3+ years of clinical supervision experience.

  1. Preference given for experience in teaching in Marriage and Family Therapy courses, including quantitative research methods, couples therapy and lifespan/human development
  2. Experience in mental health and wellness education in managing a college or university counseling services area, and with a college-age population is preferred.


  1. A valid MFT License is required. The person in this position must meet all ongoing requirements to maintain a MFT License as set forth by the Iowa Board of Behavioral Science.
  2. A valid driver’s license is required.
